Remote Security System Management
A Remote Security System is basically a security system that can be monitored or operated from a remote location. Either from a cell phone or computer. It will give the home or business owner the ability to:
- Arm/Disarm the system
- Receive email or text alerts
- Monitor the status of the zones (ready or not ready)
- Monitor the status of the system (armed/disarmed/in alarm)
- Receive alarm notifications
- Control other home functions
- Turn Lights On/Off
- Adjust Thermostat Settings
- Lock/Unlock Doors
- View Cameras
- Turn Appliances On/Off
- View Energy Usage
Many of today’s security systems can be controlled by home automation systems through RS-232 control, so chances are, if you have a security system in your home – it can be set up to be controlled remotely! This option could get expensive, but will also give you a lot of other home control features. The following systems can control many of today’s existing panels:
- Crestron
- AMX
- Elan g!
- Control4
- Savant
It is best to check with the specific manufacturers to see if their system will control your panel. If not, you can always change out the panel. Chances are, the door/window contacts, motion detectors, smoke and CO sensors, etc won’t need to be replaced. All that would need to be done is have the security panel and keypad(s) relpaces.
The other option out there for remote control are the Security/Automation panels. These are becoming more popular as the technology becomes cheaper. These systems allow you perform the same functions as above, but with an integrated panel. Some of the more popular manufacturers are:
- Home Automation Inc.
- Elk Products, Inc.
- 2GIG
These integrated panels combine security with home automation, giving the user one, easy to use system that allows remote access through smart phones, through web sites or through specially designed devices that work specifically with that system. They are designed with easy to use interfaces that make controlling the many functions easy to use.
